Compaq’s StorageWorks program includes, Server Attached Storage (SAS), Network Attached Storage (NAS), and Storage Area Networks (SANs).

Forrester Research has predicted that storage growth is going to increase, from its current growth rate of 100% per year today, to 200% by 2002. Storage demands are huge for Web applications, data warehousing, messaging, data marts and online analytical processing (OLAP). Thirty percent of data warehouses will exceed one Terabyte in size, 14% will exceed 1,000 users and 92% of all companies will pursue a data warehouse strategy by the end of 2001 (Meta Group). This implies a need for long-term, proactive approaches toward storage management. The “Compaq Enterprise Network Storage Architecture” (ENSA) is just such a approach. ENSA describes a flexible new approach to storage in the enterprise, one in which servers can acquire storage through a unique utility gateway. Compaq’s vision, based on industry standards, provides distributed pools of highly available, flexible, centrally managed storage. It can be widely deployed and managed symbiotically with computing systems and applications. ENSA provides reliable means to manage storage, including the ability to easily modify storage configurations, and to dynamically and automatically allocate storage on an as-needed basis to distributed application servers. The architecture also includes ways to quickly and easily restore and backup application data with minimal interruption of application activity. In addition to its own management capabilities, the Compaq Enterprise Network Storage Architecture can readily be integrated with general purpose computing management frameworks and tools.
